I am currently returning to my art practice after taking a 10-year break to write my book.
I have followed a varied career path, always working creatively, first as an artist teaching in prisons both in Germany and England, then developing my own painting practice and exhibiting widely. I work with themes of memory, layers of time, what and who have been forgotten by history and how to tell these untold stories.
I am also a public speaker on Art in Prisons, Germany’s post-WW2 culture of apology and atonement, and The Empty Chair in Contemporary Art.

Studio No. 04
Nicola Organ
My practice is rooted in a deep fascination with the natural world; it’s phenomena, mysteries, oddities and the fragile balance of its vulnerability and power. In drawings and paintings primarily in oil, I create imagined environments that contemplate Earth’s next iteration, toying with ideas of utopia and dystopia, what might survive the next millennia, and how familiar or alien that will look. Through a sci-fi lens, I reflect on the climate crisis and the impending shift in Earth’s trajectory, whilst imagining both destruction and the cycle of potential rebirth.
I take inspiration from science fiction in all its forms, as well as the fantastical storytelling in early Renaissance painters like Giovanni di Paolo, the surreal and eerie atmospheres of Leonora Carrington and the violent chaos of Francis Bacon.
